Cicero: North Carolinians quibble about hush puppies
I would like to find a recipe for the hush puppies I used to get when I was stationed in North Carolina.
Diana Best Harbour: How about a puppy as Uga VIII?
It saddened me to hear about the passing of University of Georgia mascot Uga VII (Story, "A shocking loss," Friday). He may not have been the most energetic bulldog, but his big cuddly face definitely won hearts in his short time. My sympathies go out to the Seiler family in its loss. Uga VII was a mascot to us, but he was the Seilers' pet, and the loss of a pet weighs heavily on hearts.
A Breed Apart
Most of us count on our four-legged friends to play with us, cheer us up, and above all, love us unconditionally. But some dogs do these things and so much more. With proper training, a canine can become a service dog or therapy dog and learn to detect seizures in humans (sometimes before they happen!), encourage students to read better and even help a wheelchair-bound person gain the independence to drive a car. Here's how your family can become part of the action.
Yuppy Puppy Treat Machine
This nifty gadget is like a gumball machine for canines, except you fill it with dry pet food instead of gum. Your dog can operate the machine all on its own, simply by pushing down on the big bone lever. This oversized "bone" makes it easy for both big and little dogs to use. The machine's inviting clear globe, bright red body, and black base will also add a whimsical, nostalgic touch to your home's decor
Puppy Gift Tote
L.L. Bean's classic boat and tote bag just received a dog-inspired makeover. Decorated with a paw print, this sturdy, iconic bag comes packed with a variety of fun toys and tasty treats. It makes a perfect gift for someone who is welcoming a new puppy into his or her life, or as a gift to your own dog. After the treats are gone, you can still use the tote to store some of your pup's favorite toys. $29.95 at L.L. Bean.
Putting Your Pup Through Kinderpuppy
The dozen or so young dogs in Dawn Sylvia-Stasiewicz' class are about to spend the next hour lavished with praise, treats and attention. For the puppies, all irresistibly cute to owners flush with new love, these regular hour-long classes over the next six weeks will seem like fun and games. Owners will play off-leash with their puppy pals, while dogs learn basic cues from their owners and interact with strangers. But this puppy class, which Sylvia-Stasiewicz laughingly calls "puppy preschool,"' might be critical for the future happiness of both dogs and owners.
Your Puppy's Firsts
Adopting a puppy often fills us with such tremendous hope and joy that we want to immediately introduce the new pet to everything and everyone, including friends, the dog park and even the family car. But not so fast! "All of these things are stimulating to puppies and can overwhelm them," says Sarah Wilson, leading dog trainer and author of My Smart Puppy (Grand Central Publishing 2006). She adds that if you're not careful, some puppies could get frightened.
A Meditation on Dog Training
Celebrity dog trainers come and go. But a group of upstate New York monks, who have been training dogs for 35 years, are experiencing a growing, international popularity.
